How Many Slides Should a Carousel Have?

TikTok allows up to 35 photos in a carousel, but 6 to 10 is the range worth aiming for. Here is how to think about length, and how to structure the slides you use.

TikTok allows up to 35 photos in a single carousel. Aim for 6 to 10.

The limit and the useful range are different questions. 35 is what the platform permits. 6 to 10 is long enough to build to a payoff and short enough that people actually reach it.

Why length matters more than it looks

A carousel is the only social format where the reader sets the pace. They swipe when they're ready, which means every slide is a decision to continue. That's the format's advantage, and it's also the constraint: each additional slide is another chance to lose someone.

A 20-slide carousel doesn't fail because 20 is too many in principle. It fails because slides 12 through 19 are usually padding, and the reader can feel it.

A structure that works at 6 to 10 slides

  • Slide 1 — the hook. This is the only slide most people will see, and it has to make the rest worth swiping for. Say what the reader gets, not what the post is about.
  • Slides 2 to 8 — one idea per slide. Resist putting two points on one slide to save space. The whitespace is doing work.
  • The last slide — the payoff or the ask. Either land the thing you promised on slide one, or make a single clear request.

If your content doesn't fill that shape, the answer is usually a shorter carousel rather than filler slides.

When longer is right

Some formats earn the length. Step-by-step tutorials where each step genuinely needs its own frame, and list posts where the number is the promise ("15 hooks that work"), both hold up past 10 slides because the reader knows what they signed up for.

The test is whether a reader who stops halfway got something useful. If yes, length is fine.

Building the set

The AI slide outliner produces a slide-by-slide structure from a single prompt, which is the fastest way to see whether your idea is a 6-slide carousel or a 12-slide one before you design anything. You can add, remove and reorder slides afterwards by dragging them in the slide tray.

Once the structure is right, see How to Create Your First Carousel for designing the slides, and What Size Should a TikTok Carousel Be? for the dimensions.
